Natural Weight Gain for Underweight People
You have probably noticed on the magazine covers standing in line at the local grocery store or watching the news, ultra skinny hollywood stars, emaciated supermodels, and underweight pop stars dominating the headlines in the media. If you are in the minority these days and are an underweight person trying to put on pounds you probably laugh to yourself every time you read one of these headlines of someone practically killing themself to attain their ideal body image.
Achieving the perfect weight and body have become an international obsession and people are willing to do just about anything these days to reach the "holy grail" of bodily perfection. I have seen a lot of shocking recent headlines of underweight models with diet pill addictions, pre teen girls with chronic eating disorders, school kids using drugs that suppress the appetite for days, and malnourished people that are almost scared to death of food.
You can see just about every extreme imaginable surrounding the subject of food, diet, and weight. Then we also see the other end of the spectrum with people spending thousands of dollars going to every cosmetic or surgical extreme imaginable, nipping this, tucking that, trying to artificially reshape their body into what they deem as appropriate, desirable, or "in" at the time.
Is any of this truly going to change us if we keep treating only our exterior physical results? What is causing all of this gross imbalance and how did we as a society become so wounded that our outside matters more than our inside? What happened to Mind, Body, and Spirit?
I am not against feeling and looking our best or improving our physical appearance. I think there is a time and place for everything. I think if you are underweight and want to gain weight you can. I think if you are overweight and want to shed some pounds that is completely achievable too. Henry Ford once said, "Whether you think you can or you can't you are right". What do you think?
Now imagine for a second that you are someone that may have been chronically under weight or malnourished for maybe their entire life. You have struggled for years to gain some weight. No matter how much you eat nothing changes. Now you see all these stars, models, and underweight girls almost killing themselves to be more like you; a tiny, fragile shell of a body. Isn't this so ironic they desire what you want to change about yourself.
You can't imagine why all of these people would want your underweight body type that you have so desperately tried to overcome or improve for possibly years. Why would anyone want to be underweight? Why would anyone want to feel weak, run down, powerless? Why can't you put on the weight and pounds that so many others despise and fear? The circle can be maddening.
How did our society ever become so obsessed with that one perfect body type that we all have to try to mold ourselves to be? Is there some sort of less tumultuous, middle way to well being? Can we re-discover some sort of balance in all of this "perfect weight, perfect body" obsession? Can we take the fear out food and fat, and eat in peace once again? Is there truly such a thing as underweight and overweight people, or are we all just a little different?
I think there is some sort of balance out their that is achievable in every facet of our lives. I think weight could be so much less of an issue if maybe we put a little focus on other areas of our life. We all have the right to feel great, look fantastic, and have wonderful and fulfilling relationships. Maybe we should nurture our emotional and spiritual needs as much as our physical needs. Maybe we should look at what is right and working in our lives instead of always looking at what is broken or needs fixed.
